What I’m Reading: October

Okay, so just a quick post today, as I’m trying to write this and edit it and upload before work at 10am. Will I make it? Who knows? If you’re reading this, you can assume I did.

HAPPY 1ST OCTOBER. Best month of the whole entire year. And that’s not just because it’s my birthday in 3 days. I do love birthdays, though. The cake. The balloons. The food. An excuse to buy all the books – keep an eye out on my Instagram for an impending book haul, that’s for sure.

No, I love October because it’s the month that everything I love comes to the forefront of people’s minds. Graveyards! Spooky stories! Death! – Okay, I don’t love death, but I love all the spooky, gothic stuff that goes with it – just something about it SINGS TO MY SOUL.

You know, how like some people like knitting, or know everything about Egyptian things.

My love is all the spooky things.

After work today, I’m going to treat myself to making an October bucket list. I did this for September, and it was pretty cool ticking everything off over the weekends. It made me properly enjoy everything about the autumnal season, like conker collecting, baked apples and making warm, sweet, chai.

I’ve already ordered the autumnal copy of Witches magazine. 7am this morning BAM – ordered. I’ve got my scary-film playlist (going to try and watch the classic spooky films this Halloween) and I’ve got my apple pie recipe waiting to be baked.

All I need now are the books I’m going to read.

What October Brings – various writers

I have this on my TBR list every October, and I’m not ashamed that I haven’t finished it yet. It’s a short story collection with lots of spooky, seasonal stories in, which I just love to dip-in and read when I’m feeling it – normally on a cold, blustery night. The perfect book to get you in the Halloween mood.

The Vorrh by B. Catling

Okay, so I’ve had this on my TBR list for AGES. Like, ages. I’m not ashamed to admit that’s mainly because of the cover, but upon purchasing, I love the sound of the story, too. A modern fairy-tale almost, with natural elements that just hook this nature-loving girl in. I can’t wait to give you more in-depth information on this. Let me know if you’ve read it?

Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk

I’ve loved Chuck Palahniuk since reading Fight Club waaaay back in 2012. Since, I’ve read Choke, which I also LOVED, and now I think it’s only right I read Haunted during the haunting period.

The Lottery & Other Stories by Shirley Jackson

Shirley Jackson has to be one of my favourite writers. What she’s done for women and horror writing is just AMAZING, and she’s definitely one of my literary heroes. I just wish I’d read more of her before now, BUT I SHALL CHANGE THAT THIS MONTH. I cannot wait to delve into this short story collection that’s hailed as being her best. Have you read any of Shirley Jackson’s work?

The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy & Other Stories by Tim Burton

I have no idea what to expect with this one to be honest with you. I actually bought it LAST October on my birthday book crawl – which you can read about here – so I thought it was about time I actually read it. I mean, what’s October without Tim Burton? I’ll read this between viewings of Beetlejuice and The Nightmare Before Christmas for ultimate effect.

Revival by Stephen King

What would an October TBR list be without Stephen King? From the books that I have left on my shelf that I haven’t read, this is the one that sounds most fitting to the season. A crime. A circus (I think) what could be spookier? And no, I cba to read IT.

So, that’s my list! I’ll most definitely try and complete it this month, because all these books sound so wonderful! I will also be reading Ray Bradbury’s The Halloween Tree because that book is a part of my Halloween tradition now. And the FILM. Have you seen the film? It’s what made me fall in-love with Halloween way back when I was 6.

What’s on your October TBR list? Let me know in comments, I love hearing what people are planning on reading! Especially in October. Happy best month ever woo!

Until tomorrow.
